There are a lot of blocked websites in South Korea. Visitors can be surprised to find that their favorite porn websites aren’t accessible from a normal computer connection when they are in the land of the morning calm. On top of that there are other websites blocked for various reasons too.
Anyone who loves watching porn or who appreciates the ability to view controversial material and make their own decisions might feel lost. Luckily, for a few dollars a day they can easily access blocked websites.
A Virtual Private Network, or VPN for short, is basically a shell computer set up somewhere. Your internet traffic can be rerouted through that computer to make it look like you are surfing from somewhere outside of South Korea. No one has any idea where you actually are. It gives you a layer of anonymity. It can also help you access streaming content that is meant only for people in other countries.
If that sounds complicated, don’t worry. You don’t actually have to know how to this stuff works to use it. All you need to do is download a single application and put in your username and password. Of course if you’re doing anything super sensitive you would already have something set up to protect yourself. For the rest of us who just want to do some casual surfing the best choice is to get a VPN.
Private Internet Access
Private Internet Access has been around for years. It is a very trusted VPN service that allows you to change your location with a single click. You can make it appear that you are surfing the web from California, Germany or France instead of South Korea in just a second.
PIA is used by a lot of people. Some want to browse blocked sites. Others want to hide their IP address or identities to get around data monitoring or spying. It is compatible with Windows, Apple, Linux and Android and easy as can be to set up.
You can turn on Private Internet Access whenever you want. If you want to turn it back off you just click. There is a small icon that lets you know when you’re connected which is really convenient. It’s only $2.91 a month if you pay two years up front.
Tunnel Bear is another of my favorite VPNs. You can basically access any website from anywhere in the world if you have a Tunnel Bear account and their application. You only have to sign up once and you can use the account on your laptop and your phone. It’s super easy to do. It’s lightning fast too!
A cool thing about Tunnel Bear is that they give you an absolutely free seven day trial just to see if you like their product. If you don’t, you just press a button and cancel. If you do like it, you can either continue on with a free account that limits you to 500 MB of data a month or spend $4.16 a month on the “grizzly plan” with unlimited data.
